Our Review of Sabor on Liberty of the Seas

Have you ever wanted delicious, homemade guacamole onboard your cruise ship? How about fresh spicy salsa? Maybe some tacos stacked on homemade tortillas? Then you should definitely check out Sabor, the specialty restaurant offering delicious Mexican food onboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas. I recently had the pleasure of dining at Sabor onboard the magnificent Liberty of the Seas during our last Caribbean sailing and I must say it was an overall positive experience. The menu features a wide variety of tacos, enchiladas, and other authentic dishes, as well as a selection of tequilas and margaritas. Read on to find out what we thought about Sabor!

The Service

Service on Royal Caribbean for the most part is always fantastic - but it was another level at Sabor. The staff at Sabor were not only attentive but also genuinely passionate about the food they served. Our server guided us through the menu with expertise, recommending signature dishes and providing insight into the flavors we could expect. Our server also teaches the guacamole making class offered on Sea days - so he was really fun and engaging. We were also celebrating a birthday while on board, and the staff all go together to make our experience special. Make sure that you let your server know if you are celebrating a special occasion.

The Vibe

The ambiance of Sabor was really cool. We usually enjoy the main dining room on most ships, but we can’t deny there is always a lot going on in a dining room with hundreds of people eating at once. The vibe at Sabor was totally different. There were a few other couples spread around the restaurant, but it really felt like we could have a nice quiet dinner. The restaurant's decor was stylish yet comfortable, creating an atmosphere that encouraged relaxation and enjoyment. The lights were dimmed and it felt very classy - with vibrant pops of color like red and yellow. Whether dining as a couple, with family, or in a larger group, Sabor provided an intimate setting suitable for any occasion. One thing that was disappointing about the ambiance though was that it was not distinctively Mexican. Had you told me I was in Chops Grille or Giovani’s Table I would have believed you. It was a nice place to eat, but just felt like… another place to eat.

The Food

Of course the food is the most important part of any dining experience. It is a huge ask to ask anyone to pay for dining when you have so many free options onboard a cruise ship. First off - let’s talk about the cost. Our dinner at Sabor was priced normally at $35per person. We had a discount of 20% each, bringing our price down to $28 a person. That is a lot to ask for us for Mexican food, which typically costs around $10 per person in our city. One pro is that you can order as many appetizers, entrees, and deserts as you like - which makes the price more justifiable.

The food was very good. Below is a full list of what we ordered - with a rating beside each one. As you can see, our highlights were definitely the appetizers.

  • Sabor’s Famous Guacamole - 10/10

  • Pico de Gallo - 8/10

  • Queso Fundido - 7/10

  • Fried Chili Calamari - 8/10

  • Spicy Chicken Flauta - 5/10

  • Tampiquena Steak - 10/10

  • Yucca Barrel Fries - 5/10

  • Banana and Chocolate Chimichanga - 5/10

So - would we go back? Yes - but with a caveat. If the next ship that we sail on has a Sabor, and we have the unlimited dining package - we would definitely eat at Sabor again. However, I do not think we would return if paying full price on its own. There are just too many other complimentary Mexican options across the Royal Caribbean fleet (El Loco Fresh, CocoCay, and even the Windjammer).

Thanks so much for reading about our review of Sabor. We expect when this ship is eventually amplified, Sabor may be replaced with other Royal favorites - Izumi or Playmakers - so if you want to try Sabor, we definitely recommend doing it soon.
