What does it take to put together a vacation rental destination as beautiful as this? We chatted with Bryndee - who gave all the details about their process!
These homes are almost a destination in themselves - much better than the typical "white linen" hotel room or Airbnb. Tell us how you got started. Where did the idea for these incredible themed vacation homes come from?
Bryndee: Funny enough, it all started when Kyle (my husband) and I rented Jeff's basement apartment. Kyle and I had a real estate business where we flipped and rented houses remotely and had just moved to Utah and rented Jeff's basement while looking for a home. He was interested in getting into vacation rentals so he came to us and asked if we could help create him one in Joshua Tree California since we have experience working in other states (we are based in Utah). So we said yes and created a hippie wonderland that has a dome house, three art muraled trailers, hammocks, pool, and more that was the perfect vacation rental for Joshua Tree--a fun, musical, bohemian town that attracts young LA crowds and rock climbers. It started as a one property project but we realized we were onto something and should make a full fledge business out of it. So we researched other markets and decided to go to Florida where we could do extreme themed homes near Disneyworld that provide an epic family experience, and Destin where we could create beautiful beach getaways. It all happened one step at a time--we didn't wake up one day randomly thinking we would create an ultra themed vacation rental, it just naturally occurred when we started looking into the Joshua Tree market and saw the local culture and how we could stand out, and then looking at other high performing vacation rentals and realizing that there was room for growth in the industry by taking themes to the next level and providing guests with not just a home to stay in, but a memorable experience. We plan to expand to other markets as well, and each city will be custom homes and experiences to what that local culture.
What inspires you?
Bryndee: I have been a long time lover of travel (in fact we did 3 months around the world with our 1 and 3 year old’s at the time), I love taking run down homes and making neighborhoods a little more beautiful, and I love spending quality time with my family and friends. So naturally vacation rentals made the perfect niche where I can take those three passions to create beautiful and fun experiences for individuals and families as they travel.
How do you combine these awesome ideas with practical functionality?
Bryndee: With vacation rentals you definitely have a fine line of creativity and functionality--we have to achieve both at Loma Homes. We want to be sure the homes are comfortable and safe while still being fun and unique. My design team and I try to put ourselves in guests shoes and mentally walk the property while designing--being sure that there is walking space, head space, outlets where needed near the bed, etc. Then, when we actually build out the home on site, my kids (3 and 6 years old) travel with me and are our durability testers--they press all the buttons, climb on everything and we just let them be kids. They may be the first but definitely not the last to stay in the homes. And lastly, someone from the Loma Homes team tests every home we create as the first guest--we sleep in every bed, use every bathroom, use all kitchen appliances, and stay as a guest for a couple days to ensure it is functional and usable once construction is complete.
When planning a new home or formulating a new idea - what goes into that process?
Bryndee: A lot of Pinterest :) And sometimes trips to the library (like recently I went and checked out every fairytale and princess book our local library had while brainstorming for our next home). We also love to get ideas from our followers so we are often posting questions and surveys on our Instagram @lomahomes to get their feedback and ideas for designs and home themes.
Speaking of new homes - do you have any exciting plans for the future we can share?
Bryndee: We currently are working on our next extreme themed homes in Orlando which will be a Princess and Knights Castle (out now as of February 2022!), and two homes in Panama City Beach which will be fully renovated nautical and beach themes.
Do you have a favorite house that you have designed so far?
Bryndee: That's a hard question because I love different designs and features from each home! My favorite room is our swamp room in Twelve Parsecs--it has beautiful murals, a custom carved bed with a special light effect, and a fog machine that makes you feel like you really are staying somewhere out of this world.
What is the most frustrating aspect of working on these designs, and the most rewarding?
Bryndee: The most frustrating or complicated part of the homes is the size logistics--making something that is grand off site (like a large custom bed) then being able to fit it through doors and up small staircases is often a challenge. So we have to strategically build things in different pieces that can seamlessly be assembled together...and sometimes it still doesn't work as well as hoped for. The most rewarding is seeing guests reactions--I love the excitement and surprise it brings, especially children. Transforming a normal home into a experience that brings joy and lifelong memories is worth all the work.
Is there a particular design element that you are most proud of?
Bryndee: I am most proud of all the details. My design team and I really try to think of everything--of course the big custom pieces are cool, but the thought that goes into every little vase, interactive feature, artwork, and even beach towels is what make the whole house an experience that you can discover something new every day of your stay.
Let's say you had an unlimited budget, and no one could say no to your design - what would be a dream project?
Bryndee: I would build an actual castle (can you tell since I'm already on my second castle style themed home, ha!) with garden grounds and interactive features throughout--a venue that could be used for guests to stay and for weddings and events.
Are there plans to place anymore designed homes outside of the Florida area?
Bryndee: Yes, for 2021 we will remain in Florida but mostly likely every year after this we will expand to at least one new location.
We for one cannot wait to see what Loma Homes has in store next! Thanks so much for reading our interview with Bryndee. Interested in booking one of these amazing spaces?
