We had the chance to chat with Todd Parker, owner and operator, about what sets Overlook Cabin Rentals apart from the rest!

Can you tell us a bit about your background? What got you into hosting?

My wife and I decided to purchase our first vacation rental right before 2020, we wanted a little getaway and thought it would be neat to rent it out to help keep up the cost and maintenance.  We fell in love with hosting families and vacation goers at our cabin and wanted to do more.  We decided to expand and make it a full time business for us.  One cabin after another we slowly grew to the offerings we have today.  Each cabin is a little different, and caters to a style or desire.

What inspired you to pick North Georgia and the Smoky Mountains as your destinations?

We started with our first cabin in the Smokies as it was honestly the closest to us.  My wife took me there since I had never been, and I was amazed at Pigeon Forge being basically the world's biggest amusement park.  There was so much to do.  As we grew our business someone mentioned to me about Blue Ridge and North Georgia.  My wife and I took a vacation down there and fell in love with the place.  The small mountain town was perfect for more mature adventurers.  Great for a getaway with friends and an amazing foodie scene.

How do you go about selecting properties for your guests?

As we have grown into this business we have learned, sometimes the hard way, what makes a good vacation rental.  We understand what a guest expects when traveling; safe roads, fully loaded kitchens, and amazing hot tubs.  That has been our focus going forward to find or build places that cater to the guest's vacation desires and provide them something different to stay in than a standard hotel room.  We want our properties to be an experience!

What sets your rentals apart from others in the area?

I would say the amount of money and time we put back into them.  I know that is not a "sexy" answer but we feel it shows how much we care about our cabins and chalets.  We invest a lot back into them to make sure every stay is amazing at our homes.  It takes a lot of time and effort to make a great vacation home and we are always reinvesting back into ours.  For example we are launching a brand new outdoor pickleball court at one cabin this spring.  Upgrades and improvements help keep our cabins fresh and inviting.

Can you recall a particular memory you have where guests had a great time, or where there was a memorable guest for you to host?

Almost too many to count! We get messages from so many guests about how they had such a great time.  What comes to mind is a recent guest who was trapped in our chalet in the snow.  We had to help dig them out but they had such a good time that they were happy the weather forced them to stay longer at the chalet. They gave us such a warm review and things like this drive us to be good hosts.

Are there any local spots or hidden gems you want guests to know about?

Don't look down at the hole in the wall places we have in the mountains!  So many businesses are small and local so be adventurous and try them while you are here.  In the Smokies our new favorite burger place is the Snoring Bear Dinner.  Blue Ridge has become such a foodie town that downtown Blue Ridge is the place to be.  Black Sheep and General Ledger are our favorites.  Talk to the locals while you are here and they will give you some amazing recommendations!

You have several awesome properties - do you have a favorite?

I hold close to my heart our every first cabin, Bearfoot Pines which is about 10 min outside Pigeon Forge.  I just love the cabin in general and it holds a special place to me.  It has everything we ever wanted in the cabin and we are so happy we get to share it with others.

Are there any design elements in the houses that you are most proud of?

We have try to come up with different designs that appeal to a wide variety of audiences.  Overlook Swim Lodge features an indoor pool with views of the Smokies from the pool room.  Our brand new treehouse, The Flame Azalea, is a small luxury retreat overlooking the mountains.  Relaxation Retreat features an outdoor pickleball court.  We like all of our properties to appeal to different aspects that travelers to the mountains are looking for.

What is the most rewarding aspect of running this business, and the most challenging?

The most rewarding is when a guest tells how much fun they had and the memories they made on vacation.  That really feels like we made an impact on their life and the money spent was well worth it.  That means so much to us.  The most challenging I would say is the logistics of running a cabin rental business.  Things break, weather happens, etc and we have to be ready to make sure our cabins are clean, fixed, and welcoming to the guests in a tight window.  It is hard but so worth it!

Do you have any plans for the future you would like to share with our audience?

Well we just launched The Flame Azalea treehouse in the Smokies this week!  It has been a project we have been working on for over a year and we are so happy with the way it turned out.  It is a luxury stay with soaring mountain views that is perfect for any couple looking to get away and experience something different.

Thanks so much for taking the time to explore Overlook Cabin Rentals with us! We know that you will build special memories when you vacation here. Special shout out to Todd for taking the time to answer our questions!
