Why you should absolutely take your toddler to the Greensboro Science Center

We are all about finding cool places to Seek out, and one of the coolest places we have been recently is the Greensboro Science Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. For this outing, we even brought along a toddler - and let me tell you - she had a BLAST. If you are interested in knowing if it is a good idea to bring a toddler to the Greensboro Science Center and learning more about all the fun things they have for kids of all ages, then read along! We are going to share all the details.

What is the Greensboro Science Center?

The Greensboro Science Center is part Museum, Part Zoo, and Part Aquarium. The Greensboro Science Center is a super fun place to Seek out, especially for kids and toddlers, but it is amazing for adults too. We will go over the actual museum, the Wiseman Aquarium, and the Zoo a little bit later in more detail, but first, here are some quick facts about the Greensboro Science Center:

  • The Museum first opened in 1957 as the Greensboro Junior Museum, and has gone through many renovations and expansions into the facility you can experience today.

  • The Greensboro Science Center is accredited by both the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and the AAM (American Alliance of Museums)

  • They host an amazing walk through display of Holiday Lights called the Winter Wonderlights

  • The onsite Carousel features 56 hand carved animals to ride, and is one of the largest in North Carolina!

  • The Greensboro Science Center welcomes well over 400,000 unique visitors every year

Where is the Greensboro Science Center?

The Greensboro Science Center is located in the city in which it get’s its name - lovely Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro is the Piedmont Triad area of North Carolina, right in the middle of the state, and the Science Center is in the northern part of the city. The Greensboro Science Center is part of a massive park complex which connects to Country Park, and even the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. These parks feature fun for toddlers, but plenty to do for people of all ages, including a dog park, a lake, picnic areas, and walking trails around the famous battleground! You could really spend all day (or weekend!) in the area! There is also plenty to do in Greensboro if you want to make a whole weekend trip of it. If you are wondering what other things there are to do in Greensboro after your trip to the Science Center - check out this post about having an amazing weekend in Greensboro! (Link Coming Soon!).

The Wiseman Aquarium

One of the first sections of the Greensboro Science Center you will likely see is the Wiseman Aquarium. This 22,000 square foot aquarium space opened in 2013 and you can’t miss it right when you walk in the door! Our toddler absolutely LOVED this section of the Science Center. There were otters (my personal favorite), penguins, an anaconda (the toddler’s personal favorite), a huge tank with many species of fish and sharks, and a massive touch tank. There are many more species we could list as well.

The Museum

The original part of the Greensboro Science Center is still one of it’s major highlights. In the museum, you can find the Time Warner Cable Extreme Weather Room, an epic dinosaur room, many reptile exhibits, toddler play spaces, and so much more! Our toddler loved playing in the play space, SciPlay Bay, but her favorite was absolutely the turtles! There is of course all the things you typically expect in a Museum, like a cafeteria and gift shop, but the only other thing that costs extra is the amazing carousel. Our personal highlight is dinosaur exhibit, Prehistoric Passages: Realm of the Dragons.

The Zoo

Our personal favorite part of a day at the Greensboro Science Center with our toddler are the outside attractions. Once you step out the backdoor, there are several acres of zoo to explore. The zoo includes adorable meerkats, majestic tigers, high flying gibbons, an interactive farm with donkeys, goats, and alpacas, a reptile discovery house, and so much more! We were seriously so surprised at how expansive the zoo was the first time we explored it. Also outside is the Skywild attraction (a ropes course high above the ground offering a bird’s eye view of the zoo) and the huge play space known as the Kiwanisaurus Treehouse Adventure (a series of treehouses connected by rope bridges and slides).

How Much Does the Greensboro Science Center Cost?

If you are like us you are done reading about all the wonderful things you can see and do at the Greensboro Science Center with your toddler, and now you are ready to find out how much it is going to cost you! Well first off, adults are $19.50 per person, but the tricky part is pricing when it comes to your toddler. If they are 2 and under, they are free! That makes the Greensboro Science Center a great option for your younger toddler. If they are 3 or older, they will cost you $17.50 each. We can say with confidence though even if you have an older toddler, the price of admission is totally worth it! You will have access to the entire aquarium, zoo, and museum! There are add on experiences like the carousel we mentioned earlier, and some others you can read more about here!

So What is the Verdict? Is it worth it to take your toddler to the Greensboro Science Center?

In a word, absolutely! Our toddler had a blast at the Greensboro Science. We think it was definitely worth Seeking out! We think it is definitely even worth the adult price of $19.50. We had a great time exploring the zoo, the Wiseman Aquarium, and the museum. If you are in North Carolina, definitely play a day trip to Greensboro so you can have a fantastic time at the Greensboro Science Center!
